Timo Dersch

Timo Dersch has been passionate about water all his life. He became a competitive freediver and dive instructor at a young age, and during his university years he loved travelling and teaching. After his studies, he became an editor at Europe's largest diving magazine, TAUCHEN. Admiration for the work of contributors led him to underwater photography, in which he found a passion and a perfect way to combine his love of diving, travel and journalism. He then became a freelance underwater photographer, working with magazines, advertising agencies, underwater video production teams and TV stations.

The prestigious Magazine Dive Photo Guide describes Timo as follows:

"Magazine editors often joke that they took a job in editorial because they didn't have enough talent, or couldn't make enough money as a contributor. Well, that is certainly not the case for our current Photographer of the Week, Timo Dersch , who - despite becoming a competitive freediver and diving instructor at a young age - had never dived with a camera when he became editor at Europe's largest diving magazine, "Tauchen", after his university studies. For Timo, it was his admiration for the images in the German magazine that led him to underwater photography, which eventually paved the way for a freelance career combining his passions for diving, travel and journalism.

As the photos in this article show, Timo has indeed become an accomplished underwater photographer. Timo's photos have won awards (including from the prestigious GEO magazine) and have been published in many national and international magazines and newspapers. His publications include National Geographic, GEO, Sport Diver, TAUCHEN, EZ Dive and many more.

Timo is fascinated by every entity of water. He enjoys exploring pristine caves, reefs, rivers and lakes: "There is life to be found in every body of water on our planet," he says, "this is what creates for me the true fascination of diving.
